Obesity is a condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to such an extent that health may be negatively affected.It is commonly defined as a body mass index of 30 kg/m² or higher. This distinguishes it from being overweight as defined by a BMI of 25 kg/m² or higher.

Excessive bodyweight is associated with diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea and certain types of cancer and osteoarthritis. It is associated with reduced life expectancy. In the US, obesity is the second-leading cause of preventable death after smoking

Innermost Secrets provides a full range of medical services including diagnostic ultrasound for both pregnant and non-pregnant women.

Innermost Living provides a full range of screening services for men and women to allow them to take control of their health and lifestyle choices.

The services are based at the Spire Hospital in Cardiff and are directed by two Consultants Dr Bryan Beattie and Dr Del Rich who work full time in the NHS in the fields of Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Maternal and Fetal Medicine.

The service is also provided Dr Tony Griffiths, Dr Clare Lipetz and Dr Kiron Bhal, also full time NHS Consultants, who are specialists in Infertility, Sexual Health and Urogynaecology.

Biological Body Clock - how long left to try for a baby?

A womans fertility declines with age and until recently there was no way of predicting when it will run out - often it was discovered when it was too late. Many more women are leaving it later to have a baby with 20% leaving it until after 35 years old. Over the age of 35 year about 30% of couples remain childless involuntarily

At 30 a woman has a 20% chance per month to get pregnant.

At 40 a woman has only a 5% chanceper month to get pregnant.

Confidential Screening for Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Bacterial and viral infections can be passed on by various means including sexual contact. Many sexually transmitted infections may be silent in both men and women and are responsible for problems such as infertility and infections passed on to unborn babies if present in a pregnant woman. They can also cause serious health problems such as pelvic inflammatory disease.

It is now possible to screen for many of the bacterial infections in both men and women using a laboratory technique callled PCR on a single urine sample. Internet ordered Urine Test Kits are now available to screen for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Trichomonas, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma, Gardnerella, Herpes and for HIV, Hepatitis and Syphyllis a new internet ordered Blood Test Kit is available.

Screening for Down Syndrome

Various tests have been developed to try to identify those women at greatest risk of having a chromosomally abnormal baby such as Down's Syndrome, who could then decide whether or not to proceed to amniocentesis. The TripleTest or Barts Test at about 15 weeks into the pregnancy detects about 65% of Down's Syndrome pregnancies based on about 1 in every 20 (5%) women having the blood test ending up with a high risk result (i.e more than 1 in 250) and then proceeding to amniocentesis. This means it misses 1 Downs Baby for every 2 it picks up!

Nuchal Translucency Scan
A new test based on an ultrasound scan and a blood test at about 12 weeks will pick up around 90% of Down Syndrome babies ie it misses 1 for every 9 it picks up!
